blog 35

So for my blog I am talking about what every person who reads this has done at least once.  Illegally downloading music, also known as piracy.  I know a lot of people are getting in huge trouble owing thousands of dollars for illegally downloading music.  I personally try to avoid any kind of stealing songs because of the risk of getting caught, so I do not do that any more.  I would rather pay for my songs than owe thousands of dollars and still not have the songs I want.  So why do people still risk the chance of being caught?  Most people think they will not get caught, or that they are above the law.  It is like asking why people go over the speed limit.  It is because we can and we usually get away with it.  The reason we have to pay for songs is to support the artists.  We are paying for their jobs.  I personally would rather pay a few dollars to keep hearing my favorite artists than them lose their job because no one is buying their music even though their songs are really popular.  In the famous case Capitol v. Thomas a girl downloaded 24 songs illegally and was caught.  She fought against it in court but lost.  She was fined 1.92 million dollars.  This is completely ridiculous if you ask me, but should be an example of why you should not illegally download music.  She would have owed less than $30 for what she downloaded and ended up owing around eight thousand dollars per song technically.
