The supernatural occurrence of Marcie’s invisibility metaphorically demonstrates the extreme and dire importance of social ranking in high school based on the views of their peers. In the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a student at Sunnydale High becomes completely invisible to her peers and faculty. No one ever noticed her disappearance, because she was so unknown to her fellow classmates that it was like she never existed. With cliques forming in every high school through out the world, they can make or break students’ high school careers. So many of their peers are judging each other, constantly rating them on their appearance. Cliques such as jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, band geeks, and ‘friendly’ girls or boys are all different groups that are made in high school. With all these people judging each other, people are unfairly placed into categories that do not fit who they truly are. The following are cliques as shown in the movie “Mean Girls”: “JV Jocks, Asian Nerds, Cool Asians, Unfriendly Black Haughties, Sexually Active, [fat] Girls who Eat their Feelings and— the centre of the film’s plot—the Plastics, teen royalty.” Even with all these groups, not everyone can fit into them. Marcie is an example of this. She tried to talk to Cordelia but she just pretended like she was not there and kept talking to everyone else. There had to be one group of people in the school that she could have been friends with. Instead, since Cordelia ignored her, so did everyone else in the school. This is what led to Marcie’s disappearance.
