I always wondered what it would be like to go to a new school where you know no one.  My high school was pretty small so whenever there was a new student everyone knew it.  You would see them in the hall and in class while everyone talked about them trying to find out their background or anything about them at all.  I always felt bad for these new students, because before they could make a real impression about who they really were, the whole school was judging them just by their looks and what they were wearing, and I admittedly did the same as the rest.  “The lines drawn by teenagers are frequently unfair, often hurtful and generally enforced by physical and psychological intimidation.” (The Truth) If this new person is not wearing nice clothes they are automatically ignored by half the school if not more.  I think it is harder for girls to move to a new school than boys.  If they are a girl they have to be extremely pretty, have their hair done perfectly, and be wearing the right amount of make up and expensive looking jewelry.  For boys they just have to be wearing basketball shorts and a T-shirt to be accepted as long as he is good looking.  Everyone is judged by their looks before their personality.  This is why so many students are left out of any kind of social circle.  It is hard to find friends when you do not have the money to afford all the expensive things that others can and you should not be counted as any less of a person for that.  It is very unfortunate that people like Marcie from Buffy are invisible to their peers because no one wants to take the time to get to know them.

  1. I though that this was an interesting post. It is true that new students at a high school do receive a lot of attention, even though it may not all be good. I hardly noticed the integration of the quote as I was reading, so it was well done.
