So as I told you before I went to OU this weekend for Halloween.  Last night me and my two friends from high school, Megan and Stephanie, got ready and met up with some other friends from high school.  Megan was the Queen of Hearts, Stephanie was Donald Duck, and I was Rihanna, the beat up version that is.  We went down court street to see all the drunks, I mean people in their costumes.  We had to avoid the poop on the road from the horses though, that was really gross.  So we went from party to party and just messed around there, ran into some other people from high school that I am not a fan of so we got out of there pretty fast.  I do not really have any crazy stories, I mean all of Athens was crazy but there was so much going on at once it was hard to take it all in.  Now I am going to leave soon and well I just saved this before I left so now it has been 6 hours since I started writing this blog.  When I got back to Columbus I took my friend to the market place to eat, then she left.  Right after that, I went to see Paranormal Activity 2 finally with my friends Anthony and Joe.  The first movie was definitely better but I am glad I went to see it.  Now I want to see Saw 3D and I would have just gone from one movie to another but we did not have 3D glasses so that would have probably ruined the movie.  Well I am going to go nap now because it was a long weekend, byeeee.

Blog 38

So I get to blog about anything today and I am currently sitting in my friend’s room at OU.  I got here Friday and went out with some friends from high school.  There are cops EVERYWHERE, but the horses are cute, although I guess you are not supposed to pet them.  It was not too crazy last night, but I have a feeling tonight will be a different story.  The process to be allowed in the dorms is really stupid though.  You have to pay $25 and be registered under someone who goes here and only one person can stay per OU student who goes here.  Then you have to wear a wristband all weekend and show people as you walk in the dorms, otherwise you cannot get in.  Way too strict.  Except when people actually come in after partying like at 4 in the morning, no on is there to check the wristbands, so you pretty much pay $25 and get a wristband to be stopped during the day when obviously no one is drinking because they are sleeping.  So now it is Saturday morning and we started the day off with a very hardy breakfast, puppy chow.  I missed it.  Now we are just sitting here until I get my blog done so we can go shower and maybe do something today.  We are planning on getting Hungry Howie’s pizza because they have flavored crust.  Well I guess I will go now, everyone have a safe weekend. :)

blog 37

Okay, so tonight (Thursday night, I am blogging ahead of time) by far was the funnest night since I have been in college.  We were having “Steeb-o-ween” at our dorm, Steeb, duh, and my roommates were trying to win the prizes for best costumes.  My one roommate Jill dressed up as Antoine Dodson, everyone should know who that is, and my other roommate Katie dressed up as Tom Cruz in Risky Business.  So Katie is putting her costume together and she has her short guy boxers on and her white button down dress shirt.  She has the high white socks and sunglasses.  This is when it starts to get funny.  I’m like, “Hey Katie, I will pay you if you put socks down your boxers so you have a package.” haha So everyone starts laughing and she just starts to blush.  We get her socks and shove them down her guy boxers.  So at this point everyone is hysterically laughing and Katie keeps touching her “junk.”  She was like “it feels weird, like I have something in between my legs.”  Everyone looks at her and was like well yeah it would be weird if it felt normal.  We told her the only time should could touch it was if she was adjusting herself or if she was scratching it, you know, the typical stuff that guys actually do.  So they both end up winning prizes, which they totally deserved.  We took a lot of pictures and I would post them but I think they might get mad at me if I did. haha ok well bye.

Blog 36

My topic is about invisibility.  I obviously have not been invisible before so I cannot write about a time when I was, but I can write about a time when I felt invisible.  There are so many times when I have been in a new environment and not known anyone.  When this happens to me, I become very shy.  I am not a very outgoing person until I have been around someone for a while.  At these times I feel invisible or sometimes I wish I really was invisible.  This way I could know what is going on, but I do not have to participate and try and fit in.  This sounds really lame because it is, but it is something I struggle with that I wish I could get over.  Coming to college was a big step with this.  I personally think I did pretty well for myself but I did not do as well as others.  Not too long ago I went out with my roommate and our friend, Maria, from down the hall to dinner.  She is always in the room so we had hung out many times, but I was never my really social self that I am around my hometown friends.  But when we went to dinner this night I was finally being myself and being really outgoing because I finally felt comfortable with both of them.  At one point Maria was like "Laura, what is with you? You are like crazy today."  My response to this was "this is social Laura.  She has her days when she is really outgoing and today is that day."  So instead of making myself invisible I need to start making better first impressions and stop being so shy.

Now if I was actually invisible for a day, I would probably mess with my friends.  I would not try and get back at people that I have had problems with.  I would not mind trying to find out some certain things, being like a fly on the wall, but I think it would be more fun to creep out my friends.  How funny would it be to hit them in the back of the head and no one else is in the room?  They would get so freaked out.  I mean I would not want to scare them to the point they need help, but it would be fun to just mess with their heads.  Also if I was invisible for a day I think I would definitely steal something.  I know that sounds bad but it would just be something small.  It is just something that I wish I could do once and get away with it, just to be able to say I did it.  I would have to put a lot of thought into this if I really did have the oppurtunity to be invisible for a day, but these are just some general ideas that I think would be fun.

blog 35

So for my blog I am talking about what every person who reads this has done at least once.  Illegally downloading music, also known as piracy.  I know a lot of people are getting in huge trouble owing thousands of dollars for illegally downloading music.  I personally try to avoid any kind of stealing songs because of the risk of getting caught, so I do not do that any more.  I would rather pay for my songs than owe thousands of dollars and still not have the songs I want.  So why do people still risk the chance of being caught?  Most people think they will not get caught, or that they are above the law.  It is like asking why people go over the speed limit.  It is because we can and we usually get away with it.  The reason we have to pay for songs is to support the artists.  We are paying for their jobs.  I personally would rather pay a few dollars to keep hearing my favorite artists than them lose their job because no one is buying their music even though their songs are really popular.  In the famous case Capitol v. Thomas a girl downloaded 24 songs illegally and was caught.  She fought against it in court but lost.  She was fined 1.92 million dollars.  This is completely ridiculous if you ask me, but should be an example of why you should not illegally download music.  She would have owed less than $30 for what she downloaded and ended up owing around eight thousand dollars per song technically.

blog 34

In class today we had to come up with some ideas for our Common Place paper.  At first I was very worried because my paper was about self esteem and bullying.  It also was about the invisibility of a girl so I was not sure how to use these ideas for another paper.  We had to write down our ideas and try to come up with as many as we could.  I only came up with seven and did not really think mine were very good.  Some of them were: If you were invisible for a day, what would you do? would you try to tell some?  Even if you would try to tell someone, would they really believe you?  That is not exactly normal to be hearing things from a person who you cannot see.  Would you mess with someone you do not like? Would you mess with your friends?  There are so many ways to answer these questions.  In the episode of Buffy the girls could still touch things and people and still talk to people.  So would you sneak around and see what people are talking about?  I do not know personally what I would do with myself, even though I am pretty sure that this is impossible, it is still something to think about.  There are so many different options to how you could spend a day of invisibility so the topic would give me many options to write about.  I kind of want to make this paper funny, but i’m not sure how to do that yet.  If anyone has any ideas I am open to suggestions.

blog 33 OTH

Well I wish I could come up with something creative to blog about so someone might enjoy this blog but I cannot think of anything exciting.  I love One Tree Hill so I guess I will write about the newest episode.  If anyone for some odd reason actually watches One Tree Hill and has not seen the newest episode then you should probably stop reading.  So the episode starts off with Quinn running around freaking out because everyone she knows is turning into a zombie.  If you have seen the show before, you would know Haley is scared of clowns so of course Jamie’s friend is wearing a creepy clown mask, which scares her.  Scene change to Brooke and Julian.  Someone is at the door and Brooke greets them in a very rude way and insults them.  The lady turns out to be Julian’s mom, so she obviously was terrified after that because she made such a bad first impression.  Julian’s mom offers to pay for the wedding but of course wants a word in planning the wedding.  Then back to Haley and Nathan.  They were pretty boring this episode, nothing really happened with them.  Nathan took Jamie and his friends trick or treating and thats about it. Everyone goes to a party that night.  So for Halloween Clay was Edward Cullen from Twilight which was pretty awesome haha.  Brooke was an orange, Julian was a Dalmatian that matched his mom that was Cruella Devil.  Mouth was the Situation and Millie (or however you spell her name) was Lady Gaga.  They are in between dating and not and Millie is trying to make Mouth jealous so she ends up leaving the party with some guy with like an eight pack.  Nathan was just in a suit, i do not know, but Haley was dressed in a Raven’s cheerleading outfit with a pregnant belly which is hilarious because she was herself in high school haha.  Well other than the funny costumes, nothing really happened so I guess I will end the blog, cya.

Blog 32 Random

Well my teams are the Steelers and the Saints.  The Steelers just won, whoo hoo! Then the Saints lost, but this is not the actual bad part.  Not only did the Saints lose, they lost to the Browns.  Yes, I did say the BROWNS.   Is this real life? Like, really?  Saints are letting me down, but as long as one of my teams are doing good I guess it is alright.  The weekend was pretty fun though.  My friends, Bethany and Cody, came down this weekend and we had a great time.  We went to one of my friend’s houses that lives here and hung out there until about 3 am.  (I love college, because I can stay out as late as I want haha).  I’m glad they came, but I miss them already :(  My roommate Katie had to work the front desk the past two mornings from 3am to 7am so we both slept in today until about noon.  Then I went to lunch with my friend Maria.  First we were going to go to Baker but they were not serving breakfast anymore.  Then we went to Mirror Lake but it does not open until 2, so then we ended up at the Market Place.  It is my favorite anyhow so I was okay with that.  So now I am sitting in my room with my friends Anthony and Joe and were watching football game after football game.  I really want to take a nap but if I do I will not be able to fall asleep tonight.  Well I will stop my random blogging, good bye.

GAME DAY! Blog 31

GAME DAY!!! Big game today against Purdue, I have not followed any other football teams this year so I do not really know if they are any good, but after last week I do not think it really matters.  So I am up for that and getting this blog done early so I do no have to worry about it later.  So my friends came last night and it was super fun, one of the best nights I have had since I have been in Columbus.  I love my new friends but it is always nice to see a friend from back home.  So I am not sure what is going to happen today, I know I am going soon to eat and then to the game.  My friend is currently yelling at me over texts because I need to get ready but I said I had to finish my blog first so he will have to wait.  I think I have a cold though.  I have been coughing a lot lately and I have had really bad headaches every morning I wake up.  This is when I wish I was home because sadly I do not really know how to take care of myself when I am sick.  If my mom does not tell me to take something I usually just end up ignoring it and acting like I feel fine even though I feel horrible.  Well I should probably go get ready before my friend leaves me here without food and without someone to walk to the game with.  Bye.

Blog 30: Homework, Friends, and Paranormal Activity

Well I literally just woke up and I am already blogging.  I am trying to get a lot of homework stuff out of the way because my friends are coming tonight to stay for the weekend so I do not want to have to worry about any homework stuff.  I was going to pull an all nighter last night but the all nighter ended around 3 am.  I got some work accomplished but my roommates were very entertaining last night so I did not get too much work done during their craziness.  I think I finally found some good articles to give my paper a good argument but it is going to be hard to figure out what parts of my paper I can keep and how much I need to take out to fit my new argument.  Then there is all the new material I am going to have to add.  So Paranormal Activity 2 came out last night and I am super excited to see it.  I am not sure when I will be seeing it because my friends here are NOT fans of scary movies, but I think my friend who is visiting wants to see it so that might work out perfectly.  The first one was awesome so I hope I am not disappointed by the second.  Sequels are almost always a let down, but the preview to this one looked so scary.  The first time I saw it was the midnight showing of one of the Twilight movies, and all the crazy Twilight fans freaked out, it was hilarious.
Well I am going to go get ready for my classes, everyone have a fun weekend. :)

Blog 29 (My argument is horrible, need help)

For my blog I will be showing you my first paragraph.  I want my argument to be about cliques and the judgmental thoughts of their peers and how it affects adolescents’ self esteem.  The episode of Buffy I watched was about a girl named Marcie who was ignored by her peers like she was invisible, and therefore, became invisible.
The supernatural occurrence of Marcie’s invisibility metaphorically demonstrates the extreme and dire importance of social ranking in high school based on the views of their peers.  Cliques are formed in high school throughout the world.  These cliques can make or break a students’ high school career.  Students’ reputations are in the process of being made before they get to freshman year of high school.  Cliques such as jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, band geeks, and ‘friendly’ girls or boys are all different groups that are made in high school.  With all these people judging each other people are unfairly placed into categories that do not fit who they truly are.  With all these opinions floating around from their peers, an adolescent could have a hard time with their self esteem.  Some students would rather be invisible than seen, because of the harsh ways they are treated.  In the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a student at Sunnydale High becomes completely physically invisible to her peers and faculty.  Although she is no longer visible, no one ever noticed her disappearance, because she was so unknown to her fellow classmates that it was like she never existed.  All she wants is someone to talk to her or a teacher to call on her in class to answer a question.
Feel free to leave many comments and help my argument actually become an argument and help my paper just sound a lot better.

28, The Real L Word

Well for my blog today I watched The Real L Word.  Chances are you have not seen this show, or probably even heard of it.  The reality show is on Showtime and gets pretty racy.  If you did not make the connection yet, the “L” is representing the word “lesbian.”  The show is about six lesbians, and all their friends, who live in Los Angeles.  The girls are Whitney, Jill and Nikki (who are engaged), Rose, Tracy and Stamie (who are dating), and Mikey.  Reoccurring characters are Natalie, who is Rose’s girlfriend, Raquel who is Mikey’s girlfriend, then Whitney’s many girls consisting mostly of Romi, Tor, and Sara.  Also, more reoccurring characters, Alyssa and Scarlet who are Whitney’s friends, actually just friends.  The show follows them around during their work and social lives.  Not too much is censored so you definitely get the full effect.  The episode I watched was called “It’s my Party and I’ll Cry if I Want To.”  Not very original, but a great episode.
Mikey is working on Fashion Weekend and her schedule is very tight and nothing is going right for her.  She flips out on her staff and then ends up at dinner with Raquel to wind down and gain her composure back, but unfortunately her mind is too focused on all the tasks she must complete before fashion week.
Nikki and Jill are hosting their first Passover Seder as a couple and are trying to redecorate the house for the occasion, so they call a consult that they have become friends with.  Instead of just a few small changes, everything begins to be remodeled, including a huge chandelier that ends up falling.  Nikki goes with the flow and makes up her mind quickly and usually does not worry about money, whereas Jill takes time to think and make decisions and is usually quite worried about the expenses, so this obviously did not turn out well.  Everything turns out fine and dinner goes better than expected.
Rose.  I do not like her.  She pretty much yelled at her girlfriend Natalie the whole episode and ended up leaving her at a party to go see her ex girlfriend.
Tracy’s birthday is coming up and she wants her mom to meet Stamie, but her mom has not quite accepted the fact that Tracy is gay.  That is about all that really happened there.
Then there is Whitney.  If you did not already come to the conclusion, she gets around.  She left off last week saying if she was going to be in any kind of relationship she would find herself with Sara.  Now onto this episode she makes a bet with Tor whoever wins their paintball tournament gets to have some fun with the other.  I am not going to go into any details since it is quite racy, but you get the point.  Whitney wins and cashes in on her bet, therefore putting Tor and Whitney even closer than before.  The next day Whitney throws a “white trash party.”  This party consists of alcohol and a blow up pool pool full of I guess water and cream corn.  Whitney and Scarlet fight and then Tor jumps in, but nothing big really happens.  Then Romi and Whitney are playing flip cup.  After a round, Romi grabs Whitney and takes her inside.  Romi and Whitney end up hooking up while Tor is right outside along with all the other party goers.  This was quite the racy scene and not too much was censored, they pretty much showed everything.  The night ends with Whitney crying on Alyssa’s shoulder, because one night she was with Tor and the next with Romi and now she is hurting herself by being a player.
Well seeing as how I am like tripling how many words I need for this blog I feel pretty accomplished, it is amazing how much and how fast you can write when you actually enjoy what you are writing about.

27

Well today I was going to do my blog on Glee, but my friends decided to wait until 8 to go eat so I guess I will be missing it tonight seeing as how it starts at 8.  I would go after but I have roommate agreements at 9 so that is not going to work.  So I guess I will be talking about my fun day again.  Started off going to my survey class and almost fell asleep because we had guest speakers and at 10:30 in the morning, that does not keep me awake, and going to bed late does not either.  So after that I ran to my theatre class because I only have twelve minutes to get to the opposite side of campus.  We reviewed for my mid term tomorrow, cannot wait for that.  So after my theatre class I went to the RPAC to eat and study for my mid term.  Then after that I went to English.  I do not think I have to review what we did in there, well unless you skipped, but if that is the case, you should have gone probably.  Now I am studying, blogging, and writing my paper.  I miss high school.  I love college, the independence and everything, but it is so much harder than high school.  I remember coming home from school and having nothing to do.  The only time I ever had to study was for the final exams the very last week of high school.  Well I guess I am going to get food now, so I will HOPEFULLY get to blog about something more interesting tomorrow, bye. :)

26, Blah.

Well, today was pretty boring so far.  I woke up and poured out my cereal.  Then I went to the refrigerator to get milk.  I opened the milk, poured it out, and it was chunky, not cool.  So needless to say I skipped breakfast this morning.  I went to my theatre class and had to take a lecture quiz, which are open book, therefore pretty easy. Then I went straight to Psychology.  I had an hour in between classes so I studied for my theatre midterm I have on Wednesday.  I took a lot of notes, like usual in Psychology, but fortunately, we got out almost forty-five minutes early.  After that I went to lunch with some friends at the Union.  I got the buffalo style chicken breast, because the first time I got it, it was pretty awesome.  Ever since then I have not gotten a good one.  They are either really dry or not even buffalo sauce on them.  I do not mean to be a complainer, but I really enjoyed it the first time, and now it is a bit of a let down.  While I ate, I sat with my friends in Woody’s and watched football highlights and volleyball.  After that I went back to my dorm and started studying for my theatre mid term all over again.  College really is different from high school, I never had homework and very rarely had to study.  In college I have homework every single day, and when I study, it is not just a quick review that takes twenty minutes at the most, it is a sit down session of at least an hour before I take a break.  I usually study about 4 hours a day, and it still does not help much when I take my tests.  Anyhow, that is enough of my blabbing, my word count currently says 314 words, so therefore I am done.  Bye.

25, Grey's Anatomy

So today for my blog I will be summarizing Grey’s Anatomy episode “Shock to the System,” so if you watch Grey’s and do not want to know what happens stop reading.....NOW.
I am currently watching the episode so this will go step by step of what is happening.  So if you watch Grey’s you would know that there was a shooting in the hospital at the end of the last season and a lot of people died.  Everyone is still traumatized by it and Meredith still has not been released to do surgeries yet.  Also, Christina and Owen got married.  Callie and Mark still seem to be best friends and Mark just asked her how long he should wait to propose to Lexie, since she is still getting over the shooting.  Nothing really entertaining right now, there are about eight victims that were struck by lightning.  Callie and Arizona are looking to redecorate their apartment.  Three of the lightning victims are fighting over one girl named Carrie, also one of the lightning victims.  There is also a heart patient that I think is getting a new heart? Maybe just fixing it, I am not sure.  They are rebuilding the woman’s “atrium out of a sac of cow meat.”  They just showed a video from the lightning hitting everyone, looks pretty fake, but then again I have never seen someone get struck by lightning.  The girl was hit by one of the guys and became paralyzed before the lightning even hit.  During the heart surgery, Christina freaks out and falls over and Meredith runs in to help her.  Meredith finally told Derek she had a miscarriage.  Alex finally gets his bullet taken out of him.  Christina’s break down causes Owen to have one of those lovey dovey speeches that usually do not ever really happen in real life.  Meredith finally gets cleared for surgery.
Not the most entertaining episode of Grey’s but I still enjoyed it.

24

Well today I went searching around every where for my Halloween costume.  I left my house at 10:30 and did not get back until 5.  Not that I think anyone will steal my costume idea or will actually see them even if they did, but I am going to keep my costume a secret.  I searched for the actual outfit, a head band, a wig, jewelry, and shoes.  I got the outfit, and the head band so far.  I did not make as much progress as I wanted to.  I think I am going to end up just using temporary hair spray paint instead of getting the wig and hopefully my roommates can fix my hair how I need it.  My Halloween costume is a singer, so if anyone can guess who it is from my very vague description I will give them five dollars, haha.
Also today, I took my nephew Quinn to Boo at the Zoo, which is just a small zoo where you can walk around, give the people working there a ticket, and you get candy.  He is only a little over one but did a good job at giving the tickets to the workers.  He was Woody from Toy Story.
Well Buckeyes just lost and I am pretty happy I am not in Columbus because people are probably rioting.  Other than that today was a pretty good day and I am looking forward to going back to the college life tomorrow.  My friend who goes to Miami of Ohio is taking me back so it should be a fun road trip.

blog 23

First off I would like to say how excited I am to write this blog about anything I want.  This blog is going to be about anything that pops in my mind, so fair warning for the randomness of this blog.  Today I traveled back to my hometown and am very excited to see all my friends.  My dad picked me up and we talked all the way back about the past month.  I never thought about how many new stories I have until I started blabbing them off to my dad.  College is so much different than high school from the homework and tests to the social settings.  I am now back at my house and finally hanging out with my friends from high school.  It is so weird not seeing them for so long, it has been about two months.  Kind of upset because one of my friends passed Ohio State the other day but did not stop to see me.  My birthday is coming up in two weeks and all of my friends are coming down and staying for the whole weekend.  I have only been home for an hour and I already miss my roommates.  I was very fortunate to get such great roomies for my freshman year.  My friends are now arguing about how long they can stay tonight because they have to get up early, which is really lame, but thats alright.  So tomorrow I get to take my little nephew Quinn to Boo at the Zoo which is just a trick or treat place for little kids.  Well my friends are getting annoyed because I am blogging so I will try and make the next blog more exciting, sorry guys, bye.

blog 21

A few days ago I wrote my blog about an article analyzing the movie Mean Girls.  I think this movie has such a strong correlation to the real world settings of high schools in America.  There is not one high school that has no drama and where everyone gets along.  People can completely change from freshman year to senior year.  It is not so often that the popular cheerleader becomes a ‘geek,’ but someone who is known as a jock might quit the sport they were known for.  In high school people are finding out who they are. The movie was meant to show the hardships of finding your place in a new school.  “The film’s device of ‘the new student’ allows the audience to indulge in one of the great challenges of adolescence: How do I fit in? The primary agenda of the young people is portrayed as identity and belonging, not morality.” (Life in, 4)  This task may sound pretty simple, but it is not so easy to complete.  There are so many different types of people that no two people are completely alike.  So how do you fit in?  Being a new student means you have to get to everyone around you to find someone who’s personality matches yours.  I was lucky enough to have the same group of friends from seventh grade to now.  We are all so different yet all the same.  Some of us played sports, others were more into academics, and others into singing and dancing, but yet our personalities all went together.  Therefore I do not think fitting in necessarily has anything to do with making friends, because we did not all meet through sports or other activities.  We don’t always ‘fit in’ the same category.  Sometimes we just fall in to place.

I always wondered what it would be like to go to a new school where you know no one.  My high school was pretty small so whenever there was a new student everyone knew it.  You would see them in the hall and in class while everyone talked about them trying to find out their background or anything about them at all.  I always felt bad for these new students, because before they could make a real impression about who they really were, the whole school was judging them just by their looks and what they were wearing, and I admittedly did the same as the rest.  “The lines drawn by teenagers are frequently unfair, often hurtful and generally enforced by physical and psychological intimidation.” (The Truth) If this new person is not wearing nice clothes they are automatically ignored by half the school if not more.  I think it is harder for girls to move to a new school than boys.  If they are a girl they have to be extremely pretty, have their hair done perfectly, and be wearing the right amount of make up and expensive looking jewelry.  For boys they just have to be wearing basketball shorts and a T-shirt to be accepted as long as he is good looking.  Everyone is judged by their looks before their personality.  This is why so many students are left out of any kind of social circle.  It is hard to find friends when you do not have the money to afford all the expensive things that others can and you should not be counted as any less of a person for that.  It is very unfortunate that people like Marcie from Buffy are invisible to their peers because no one wants to take the time to get to know them.

This is probably the best article I could have found for this subject.  The article I read is analyzing the movie Mean Girls, which just about every teenager has seen.  The article begins summarizing the movie, discussing how cliques are the base of this movie.  The main character in the movie is Cady Heron who just began her junior year in high school after being home schooled by her zoologist parents in Africa.  Her first day she ends up eating her lunch in a bathroom stall, because none of the cliques would accept the new girl.  The next day Janis (a very punk ‘art freak’) and her friend Damian (who is gay) let Cady sit at their table as they describe all the different cliques at the school to her.  The cliques consisted of: “JV Jocks, Asian Nerds, Cool Asians, Unfriendly Black Haughties, Sexually Active, [fat] Girls who Eat their Feelings and— the centre of the film’s plot—the Plastics, teen royalty.”  The head of the Plastics, Regina George, rules the school.  Cady and her new friends devise a plan to turn Cady into one of the Plastics to find out all their dirty secrets to ruin them.  When this happens Cady ends up actually turning into one of the Plastics.

The point of the movie was to show, in a comical way, the process that new students have to go through when arriving at new schools.  The main scene in the movie that really conveys how teen girls work is when Cady fantasizes attacking Regina like the animals would in the jungles in Africa.  This is pretty much explaining that high school is survival of the fittest.  It is not about being yourself and finding friends like you, it is just about fitting in with a group so you are not a social outcast.  In the episode of Buffy that I am using for my paper Marcie is the girl being ignored.  This article is concluding that since Marcie has no friends it is because she does not fit into any of the cliques in the school.  I somewhat agree with this, but it is almost impossible not to find someone you can be friends with.

I finally found an article that relates to what I have been trying to find.  The article starts off talking about a very popular and wealthy girl who decides to talk to some unpopular skater boys and loses her social ranking throughout the whole entire school.  She went into a stage of anorexia trying to win her place back in the popular crowd, but has since found new friends.  Although she still relates high school to “hell.”  This is just an example of how fast a person’s reputation can be ruined in high school.
David Zinn, an adolescent psychiatrist at Chicago's Beacon Therapeutic Center, compares high school to an adult society of hierarchies.  For years, adolescents have been judging and ranking their peers putting them into specific categories and ranks.  This ranking is almost impossible to change.  The only known change I have ever seen is when a popular person gets demoted, because their “friends” did this to them.  Since studies show adolescents spend less and less time with their parents, these cliques are consuming who they are known to be, and who they really are.
This article suggests that jocks implement the rules, meaning they are at the top of the totem pole, which, I partially agree with.  I have also seen athletes that are really good at a sport, but not popular, and do not become popular due to being so good at sports.
With all these cliques, the same types of outfits for these groups are worn virtually the same from coast to coast.  The article also ends saying, “fitting in is a choice.”  I do not believe this is true, because there is not two people that are exactly alike, and being someone you are not is not something anyone should have to do.

I am having a hard time finding articles that have to do with my topic but this was as close as I could currently find.

The article I am reading today is about a study only on girls and their behaviors that are developed through social acceptance or rejection.  The writer starts off talking about how most experiments are only tested on males or males and females together.  There usually are not experiments just about females.  Girls  behavioral norms tend to change more often than boys.  In the study girls were examined to see if they gained any unusual symptoms of depression or anxiety with bad peer relations.  People are who the people around them judge them as.    These children are more likely to be less assertive, less socially skilled, and less mature than the suggested “normal” rate.  It is suspected that in girls with these difficulties will develop internalized problems.  Because of these struggles, children, and more likely in girls, will stop trying to be socially active, because of their lack of confidence.  The study was trying to figure out if these social problems are caused by depression or anxiety or if the depression or anxiety is the result of the social inability.  The results of the experiment showed no significant relations with neglected girls and depression or anxiety.  However, the results did show support of the hypothesis that neglected girls are more at risk for developing internal problems.

The article I read today was called, "Adjustment of Popular Teens in Emerging Adulthood."  It basically talked about how teenagers went from high school into the real world and how they adjusted based on their early childhood to after graduation.  The article was followed over a span of three years.  The information that was gathered was self reported by the 264 students involved in the lower middle class.  They were asked to take a survey about depression, psychopathology, workplace victimization, and risk behavior.  Studies show that starting early in life, children that are socially awkward are at a higher risk at being unaccepted by others around them as they get older.  They have a problem easing their way into different social classes or groups due to the last of sociability.  The study also suggests the difference between popularity and perceived popularity.  It also shows that rational aggression has a lot to do with how young adults move forward in life and are accepted into different groups.  Physical rational aggression starts to lower as children get older, such as in middle school and is at its lowest in high school.  Scientists believe that there is more to “getting along” with other peers than our personality.  Obviously factors such as a person’s background and social status play a factor in some judgement of the person.  Like-ability and sociability are the most contributing factors to long term friendships and relationships.  Since the study is focused on only certain factors, the article agrees that even with the tests and its results, there is more to a person than can be studied and this is why it is so hard to see why people treat others the way they do.

For my paper I am relating my episode to the social rankings of people in society and how it affects our lives.  In my episode of Buffy, a girl turns invisible because she was so  unknown to her peers and ignored that it was like she really was invisible.  I’m looking for topics about social outcasts, high school popularity, social relevancy, and why people do not fit in as well as others.  These are mainly terms that are related to the person who is not being seen by the people around them.  Also, from the other view point can be taken from the people who ignore the others.  Why would you ignore someone who starts a conversation with you?  Why don’t you even give them a chance?  From my perspective I think it is just rude.  People should not be put into social rankings based on what everyone sees in them.  If no one actually talks to then, how would they know how “cool” they are?

People are not willing to go out of their way to talk to someone that might be having a bad day.  Just a simple hello could change the course of their life.  In the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a student at Sunnydale High becomes completely invisible to her peers and faculty.  No one ever noticed her disappearance, because she was so unknown to her fellow classmates that it was like she never existed.  All she wants is someone to talk to her or a teacher to call on her in class to answer a question.
In the episode, “Out of Mind, Out of Sight,” they show flashbacks to times when Marcie tried to talk to people or would try to answer questions in class, but everyone just saw right past her and paid no attention to her.  She wants to get revenge on Cordelia who is one of the people who ignored her the most and also because Cordelia is the most popular girl in the school, and she could not miss a day without someone noticing her absence.  Starting her revenge plan, Marcie attacks Cordelia’s boyfriend in the locker room beating him with a bat.   Then Cordelia’s friend is pushed down steps.  At this point no one knew what was causing this. Buffy hears laughter and tries to follow this invisible person.   Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Giles search around and finally find out the girl is Marcie.  On top of the other attacks,  she suffocates a teacher that had completely ignored her in class even though Marcie had her hand raised high in the air.   We now know that Marcie’s plan is to go after Cordelia and everyone around her that ignored her the same way Cordelia did.  Buffy is then like a body guard for Cordelia to make sure Marcie does not attack her, but when Buffy puts her in a janitors closet to change she no longer hears Cordelia talking and knows Marcie has got to her.  She busts in but is quickly knocked out by Marcie and she wakes up to being tied up in a room with Cordelia.  In the mean time, Giles, Xander, and Willow are trapped in a room filled with gas, but Angel saves them.  Buffy ends up getting out of the ropes and uses her super sense of hearing to located Marcie.  She knocks her down into a blanket and government like people come in and take her away.  Buffy asks if there has been other people that this has happened to at other schools but they do not answer her.  They end up taking Marcie to a special school where the whole classroom of students are invisible.

The supernatural occurrence of Marcie’s invisibility demonstrates the extreme and dire importance of social ranking in not only high school, but in society as a whole.  People go to work, school, or maybe just to the gym or grocery store and pass the same people day after day.  How many times do these people just say a casual hello?  How many times do they just walk by?   These people are complete strangers even though we have seen them so many times.  This is how society works.

Blog 13 "Go Fish"

Today I watched Buffy The Vampire Slayer, “Go Fish” and I think the message was a lot more obvious than what the rest of the season has shown.  In this episode the swim team has been really successful and has a big meet coming up.  While celebrating the last win at the beach one of the swim teammates was eaten from the inside out.  After this, the rest of the swim team started to be eaten, too.  While deciding what Xander wanted to get at the vending machine, he hears a scream from Cameron and runs to see what is happening.  Cameron’s skin is laying on the ground and when Xander turns around there is a tall black monster behind him.  They later find out this creature is called a Gill monster.  Xander goes undercover and joins the swim team to try and find out what is causing the swimmers to turn into these monsters.  The nurse discovers that Coach Marin is supplying steroids to the team through the steam in the sauna.  So long story short Buffy saves the day like always in the end and the swimmers have to go through plasma treatments to get better.

The meaning I’m getting from this episode is the effects of using performance enhancers.  They can completely change your personality and how you behave.  This was represented by how the swimmers turned into monsters after taking the steroids.  This episode is pretty much saying when people take steroids they turn into someone they are not.

Buffy, "Out of Mind, Out of Sight"

So since I have been having so much trouble finding any real life material in the second season of Buffy I searched around on the internet and found a season one episode.  Today I watched “Out of Mind, Out of Sight” which has related with everyone sometime in their life.  In this episode a girl named Marcie is so invisible to all the peers at her school that she literally becomes invisible.  She is not a witch or anything, but since the school is on top of the hell mouth there are magic kind of powers just floating around causing supernatural things to happen without anyone knowing.

In the episode they show flashbacks to times when she tried to talk to people or would try to answer questions in class, but everyone just saw right past her and payed no attention to her.  She wants to get revenge on Cordelia was one of the people who ignored her the most and, because she is the most popular girl in the school and could not miss a day without someone noticing she was not there.  Marcie attacks Cordelia’s boyfriend in the locker room, then Cordelia’s friend, and then a teacher.  Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Giles search around and finally find out the girl is Marcie and Cordelia knows that she is after her.

What this episode is trying to get across is that there are so many people that just want to be involved with others but are not given the chance and are just ignored.  This affects people so much that they feel they are actually invisible.

Buffy, "The Dark Age"

Today I watched Buffy The Vampire Slayer, “The Dark Age” and once again this season I really have not been able to find a good theme from the episode.  I think this episode was trying to cover that people are not always what they appear to be.  Buffy, Xander, and Willow all see Giles as a very put together man who is always working and does not really have much of a social life.  He is always at the library, whether it is during school hours or after looking up information about vampires and other creatures.  In this episode we learn that Giles has a few secrets he has been keeping.  He used Eyghon which switched him in and out of other people’s bodies.  I do not really understand how this worked or who took over Jenny’s body, I think Philip took over her body.  Ethan is also behind this.  He knocks her out and straps her down to a table.  Willow, Xander, and Angel come to rescue Buffy.  Angel attacks Jenny and strangles her.  After a while the demon comes out of her and goes into Angel.  Angel forces the demon out of him, because he has a demon himself, therefore the Eyghon is gone.
This definitely shows that Giles has more of an interesting life than what the group once thought.  Everyone has their “demons” that they cannot get rid of and I think this is what this episode was trying to express.  You cannot change the past or hide it.

Buffy, "Lie To Me"

Does lying ever make things any better? I watched Buffy The Vampire Slayer, “Lie To Me.”  One of Buffy’s friends from her old high school, Ford, moves to Sunnydale.  He says his dad got a job there and he would be finishing his senior year there.  Angel is suspicious of Ford so he goes to Willow to research on him and find out he is not even registered in the school’s database.  Willow, Angel, and Xander go to a hang out place that Ford is associated with and find out there are a bunch of people who want to be turned into a vampire.  Ford meets up with Spike and tells him he can get them Buffy is Spike will turn him into a vampire.  Ford asks Buffy out that night in order to lure her into the hang out with all the wanna-be vampires and Spike and all his vampires.  Buffy tries to convince Ford to stop everything, but he tells her he only has six months to live and he wants to become a vampire to avoid that, while he is still healthy, in the physical sense.  This is the first point when lying would have made the situation easier, because by Buffy knowing this she feels bad for him and it makes stopping everything harder.  In the end Buffy and all the wanna-be vampires get away but Ford is left with Spike and all the other vampires.  She returns for his body and later visits his grave.  As she is talking about how hard life is and asks Giles if life ever gets easier.  Ford jumps out of his grave and Buffy slays him.  That pretty much answered her question.
This episode shows how hard life can be, but the truth nor a lie can really help.  Life is made the way it is, you have to fight past the tough times to make it to the good times.

More Buffy, new season

For this blog I watched Buffy The Vampire Slayer, “Halloween.”  I do not feel that the episode had one theme or meaning to it, I think it was just a fun episode since it had to do with Halloween.  What I want to focus on is the jealousy that overcomes Buffy when any other girl is associated with Angel.
She is supposed to be meeting Angel for a date at The Bronze.  She walks in and sees Cordelia and Angel talking.  She automatically assumes it is some kind of flirting, when really Angel was ignoring her and talking about Buffy the whole time.  Buffy starts to turn around and leave, but Angel sees her and stops her from leaving.  Then Buffy is looking through a book about Angel that she stole from Gile’s personal office in the library.  She finds the girls that he hung out with at the age of eighteen before he was a vampire.  She thinks this is the kind of girl that he wants her to be so she dresses up like the girl in the book for Halloween.  So not only does Buffy go completely out of her way to impress a guy that is already in love with her, she sneaks behind Gile’s back just to look up Angel’s past.  Some jealousy is usually good in a relationship, but this is taking it too far.  Angel has not shown any reason for Buffy to doubt how he feels about her.  The episode ends with them kissing and happy, but if the jealousy continues I can see there being a problem.
